SPLC Action Fund Applauds Senate Confirmation of Catherine Lhamon

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following today’s Senate confirmation of Catherine Lhamon for Assistant Secretary of the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) within the U.S. Department of Education, SPLC Action Fund Chief Policy Officer LaShawn Warren released the following statement:

“The SPLC Action Fund applauds the confirmation of Catherine Lhamon as Assistant Secretary of the Office of Civil Rights. In her, the country will have a strong advocate for children and their civil rights. Her impressive track record demonstrates a deeply rooted commitment to equity and justice, which is so vital for our nation’s children.

“Civil rights organizations and the communities we work alongside have long relied on the Office of Civil Rights to enforce the rights of children across the Deep South and beyond. We have no doubt that with a proven leader like Catherine Lhamon, the communities we serve, including Black, Indigenous and other children of color, children with disabilities, LGBTQ+ children, children from immigrant families and children experiencing poverty, will have a much greater chance at reaching their full potential.”
