WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Pete Buttigieg became the first openly gay, Senate-confirmed cabinet member to lead the U.S. Department of Transportation. The confirmation elevates Secretary Buttigieg to one of the most coveted posts in the federal government.

The following statement is from Scott McCoy, interim deputy legal director with SPLC Action Fund:

“We applaud Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s historic, bipartisan confirmation to lead the U.S. Department of Transportation. As our country’s first openly gay cabinet member, his selection once again demonstrates the Biden administration’s commitment to inclusivity and equality.

“As a U.S. Navy Reserve veteran and first openly LGBTQ executive in the state of Indiana during his dual terms as mayor, Secretary Buttigieg continues to not only make history, but serve our country with honor and distinction.

“Secretary Buttigieg’s confirmation ensures that LGBTQ+ persons will finally see themselves represented in the highest levels of government.”
