SPLC Action Fund Supports Impeachment of President Trump

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Democrats introduced an article of impeachment against President Trump for inciting a massive mob attack on the Capitol.

Margaret Huang, president and CEO of the SPLC Action Fund, issued the following statement in response.

“President Trump must be removed from power immediately. On Wednesday, the president incited his followers to wage an unprecedented assault on Congress — an attack that left five people dead and will be forever remembered as one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. The president refused to send aid to the beleaguered Capitol Hill police trying to prevent the buildings from being overrun and refused to condemn the attack or order his followers to stand down. The blood of the dead is on his hands and on the hands of all of those who tried to help the president overturn President-elect Biden’s clear victory.

“Democracy demands accountability. If people who attempt to destroy democracy remain in power, the future of our country is in grave danger. It signals that extremists can continue to work to subvert our system of government and most fundamental rights without consequence, essentially giving a blanket “go-ahead” to white supremacists, far-right groups, and anti-government militias across the country.

“Even with less than two weeks left in office, President Trump poses a clear and growing threat to the nation. He is clearly unstable and unfit to carry out the duties of his office or to wield the fearsome powers of the presidency, including control of the military and the nation’s nuclear arsenal. If he remains in office for the duration of his term, there is a serious risk that he could cause further damage to our democracy and institutions of governance. Since Vice President Mike Pence is so far refusing to do his constitutional duty and invoke the 25th Amendment, Congress must vote to remove him immediately. Thereafter, Congress should also move to expel members who supported the insurrection by voting against certification of President-elect Biden’s victory.”
