ATLANTA, Ga. — Today, the SPLC Action Fund endorsed Peter Hubbard in his race to serve on the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC), the elected body responsible for setting rates for utilities like electricity, gas and telecommunications. Hubbard, who is running for the District 3 seat, has deep knowledge of the energy industry, having founded the Georgia Center for Energy Solutions in 2015, which conducted independent analyses of the state’s proposed power strategies. In expert testimony provided to the PSC, he has highlighted the need to strengthen Georgia’s power grid with clean energy and battery storage, which he argues could help lower utility costs for residents. During his campaign, Hubbard also pledged not to take any contributions from oil, gas and coal industry executives, lobbyists or PAC
“When temperatures rise and extreme weather events increase in frequency, Georgians see it on their power bills and feel it in their wallets,” said Madison Hollon, program manager of political campaigns, SPLC Action Fund. “Peter Hubbard has repeatedly advocated on behalf of those calling for relief from high energy bills, running the numbers to prove that Georgia can create a more resilient power grid that invests in clean energy solutions, meets the demands required for economic growth, and is also cost effective for residents. While it’s easy to overlook elections for lower profile roles, Georgians should not underestimate the importance of the PSC because these officials have a direct impact on whether basic necessities will continue to rise in price or become more affordable. The SPLC Action Fund believes Peter Hubbard is the right choice to bring accountability to the PSC and relief to residents.”
Elections for seats on the PSC are scheduled for Tuesday, November 4. The SPLC Action Fund has also endorsed Dr. Alicia Johnson for the District 2 seat on Georgia’s PSC. Find more information about how to vote in Georgia and learn more about the responsibilities of the PSC.
