Alan B. Howard (chair) is a lawyer in New York with the international law firm Perkins Coie. He centers his practice on trial work, international arbitration and complex litigation management. He handles litigation matters in a wide variety of areas and has been a successful lead trial lawyer in cases involving, among others, a large communications company, a major consumer products company and a transportation manufacturer. He also does extensive pro bono work, including representing one of the youths embroiled in the case known as the Jena Six. Howard became the young man’s legal guardian, sending him to a prestigious boarding school and giving him a fresh start in life. Howard was elected chair of the SPLC Board of Directors in 2013.
