MONTGOMERY, Alabama — The SPLC Action Fund is proud to endorse mayoral candidatesBarbara Drummond and Portia Shepherd for the upcoming Sept. 23 runoff election. These two candidates are dedicated community-focused public servants with a proven track record of improving the lives of others through government and non-profit work.
Barbara Drummond, Mobile mayoral candidate
- The former Alabama state representative and Public Affairs Director for Mobile County has dedicated her life to serving citizens of Mobile by improving city services and fighting for resources for families and local businesses. Her track record includes securing $11.4 million in new state funding for Mobile County Public Schools, co-sponsoring the Alabama Literacy Act and securing $15 million for construction of Mobile’s international airport.
Portia Shepherd, Uniontown mayoral candidate
- Shepherd currently serves as executive director of BlackBelt Women Rising, a nonprofit dedicated to providing culturally sensitive support services to individuals in crisis and to promoting environmental justice. Among its many projects, the organization has worked on Alabama’s initiative to address longstanding issues with the drinking water and wastewater systems in the community.
