SPLC Action Fund Endorses Ray Sykes in Upcoming Special Election

JACKSON, Miss. — Today, the SPLC Action Fund endorsed Ray Sykes in the special election for the Ward 1 commissioner seat in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Sykes previously emerged victorious in the primary election against the four-term incumbent on April 22 by only two votes. However, the results were successfully contested, with both candidates agreeing to a special election, which Gov. Tate Reeves has set to take place on Nov. 18.

“The especially close nature of this race showcases how important it is for every member of the community to get out and cast their ballots in local elections, as less than a handful of votes could determine the winner,” said Madison Hollon, program manager of political campaigns, SPLC Action Fund. “Ultimately, we hope that the people of Ward 1 will once again choose Ray Sykes to represent them, as his platform centered around equity will give a voice to all of his community’s residents and will ensure that the local government is responsive to their needs. Clarksdale residents have a second opportunity to back a strong candidate who is committed to helping the city thrive, and we encourage all eligible voters in Ward 1 to head to the polls and participate in the democratic process so that their leadership reflects their priorities.”
