ATLANTA, Ga. — Today, the SPLC Action Fund endorsed Helen Willis in her race to represent District 5 on Fulton County’s Board of Commissioners.
A former City Council member for South Fulton, Willis has a strong track record of securing millions of dollars in community investments to address challenges related to housing, hunger, employment and safety. She has championed legislation prohibiting ICE detention centers from operating out of warehouse properties in the city and helped restore funding to reopen a Job Corps Center, strengthening workforce development in the community. Her campaign now centers around addressing overincarceration and racial inequity in the criminal justice system and promoting health equity in Black and Brown communities.
“Helen Willis has spent eight years fighting for the people of South Fulton, and she is ready to bring that same spirited leadership and energy to the Board of Commissioners to deliver solutions for communities across Fulton County,” said Madison Hollon, senior program manager of political campaigns, SPLC Action Fund. “Families throughout the county deserve leaders like Willis who understand how to balance empathy and accountability in order to create policies and programs that ensure every resident has the opportunity to find good paying jobs in their neighborhoods, can benefit from quality, affordable healthcare, and can access city services that make Fulton County a great place to build a life.”
If elected, Willis has also committed to expanding voter education, registration and early voting opportunities with a particular focus on underserved communities, as well as strengthening and securing election administration.
“Willis understands that voters become disengaged when they don’t feel heard,” added Hollon. “As a council member, she has prioritized open dialogue through regular community outreach. And as a board commissioner, she’s committed to ensuring the residents of Fulton County can participate in the decision-making that shapes their communities at the ballot box and in transparent public forums.”
