SPLC Action Fund Endorses Three Candidates in Alabama Court Races
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Today, the SPLC Action Fund endorsed two candidates for county district court judge and one candidate for circuit clerk ahead of Alabama’s general elections on Nov. 5, 2024. These candidates have a record of service in their communities and a commitment to protecting the rights of Black and brown Alabamians.
“In a time where fundamental rights are constantly attacked, there are those whose duty to protecting the most vulnerable are standing up and serving as a shield to injustice,” said Madison Hollon, program manager of political campaigns for the SPLC Action Fund. “We are excited to endorse these three candidates who embody the values and virtues of fairness, equality, and justice for all residents.”
Endorsed candidates include:
- Ashley Bell, running for Shelby County District Court Judge, Place 2, is known for her unwavering commitment to upholding the law, ensuring fair and impartial justice, and protecting the rights of all individuals. Attorney Bell has a great record of service to her community and an unwavering commitment to Alabama values. That commitment to service also inspired her to become a licensed social worker.
- Chuantae Brown, running for Jefferson County District Court Judge, Place 1, is an experienced public defender and prosecutor. She aims to bring compassion and integrity to the role, advocating for equal justice for all. In addition to her legal work, Attorney Brown has a strong track record of community service, including her efforts in 2011 to assist tornado victims in Tuscaloosa.
- Karen Dunn Burks, running as the incumbent for Jefferson County-Bessemer Division Circuit Clerk, is a dedicated and active member of her community. She has advocated for additional absentee voting locations and to make voting easier for Bessemer residents. Since taking office in 2013, the Alabama native has made history as the first African American woman to hold this position.
