SPLC ACTION FUND: Historic Nomination of Dr. Rachel Levine Focuses New Attention on Transgender Equality

WASHINGTON, DC – President-elect Joe Biden announced that he will nominate Dr. Rachel Levine, the current secretary of health for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as assistant secretary for health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The following statement is from Scott McCoy, interim deputy legal director with SPLC Action Fund:

“We celebrate Dr. Rachel Levine’s historic nomination to be the first openly transgender Senate-confirmed federal official. Her leadership and expertise in the public health arena will be crucial in the coming months as the Biden administration works to navigate the pandemic.

“Dr. Levine’s confirmation will also help bring awareness and knowledge to the medical needs of LGBTQ+ persons. In the position, she can help reinstate and strengthen multiple protections rolled back by the Trump administration. Additionally, her expertise in children’s health, the opioid crisis, medical marijuana, adolescent medicine, and more will be a great asset as the Biden administration tackles other health disparities created by the prior administration’s ineptitude, especially in underserved communities and communities of color.

“This selection not only demonstrates the Biden administration’s commitment to the LGBTQ+ community but confirms that his team sees and appreciates the dignity and value of all Americans.”
