SPLC Action Fund Poll Shows Democrats Lead Congressional Race in Alabama

New poll charts growing enthusiasm for the Democratic ticket, with Shomari Figures leading in Alabama’s newest congressional district

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Today, the SPLC Action Fund released new polling of likely 2024 General Election voters in Alabama’s second congressional district. The results show Democrats benefit with Kamala Harris on top of the ticket, boosting voter motivation. This motivation is translating into a double-digit lead for Shomari Figures in the congressional race, according to the poll. However, Figures still has key voters to win over as undecided voters make this congressional race tighter than the presidential race.

“Voters are fired up and ready to elect a representative who understands the challenges facing people in this district and will do something about it,” said Brandon Jones, director of political campaigns, SPLC Action Fund. “Our poll shows the palpable energy behind the Democratic ticket and the opportunity to harness the full voting power of Alabama’s second district in the home stretch of this campaign.”

The poll, conducted by Impact Research in July-August 2024, finds:

  • Figures holds a 12-point lead over Dobson, 51% to 39%, with 10% undecided voters. Figures and Harris run about evenly districtwide.
  • 44% of voters are enthusiastic about supporting Figures, compared with 29% for Dobson.
  • Figures (58% name ID) is better known than Dobson (39% name ID), but four-in-ten voters still don’t know enough about him.
  • 85% of voters say their vote is important in deciding the congressional race and 83% in deciding the presidential race.
  • More than six-in-ten voters say that K-12 schools, jobs, fighting crime and reducing gun violence are extremely important priorities.

“We’ve known from day one that this will be a close race. While there’s certainly momentum on the Democratic ticket, as this polling confirms, the race will come down to voters’ powerful choice to show up at the polls on Election Day,” concluded Jones
