SPLC Action Fund Releases Its 2024 Policy Platform

WASHINGTON — Today, SPLC Action Fund, the 501(c)4 affiliate organization to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), released its policy platform ahead of one of the most consequential elections of our time. This action guide outlines recommendations for candidates and policymakers at the federal, state and local levels.

“This is a critical moment for the South given its increasing diversity and political influence — and it requires voters to thoroughly evaluate both current and aspiring lawmakers on issues of paramount importance to their communities,” said LaShawn Warren chief policy officer for the SPLC Action Fund. “Across the Deep South, especially in communities of color, there is a pressing need for economic opportunities, secure and affordable housing, access to healthcare, actions to address hate-fueled extremism, better educational opportunities and equal voting rights with fair representation.”

The SPLC Action Fund platform, “Toward a Just and Equitable Future,” provides a clear path for executive, federal agency and congressional action in five key areas:

  • Restore and strengthen democracy with a strong and explicit commitment to racial equity.
  • Combat hate and extremism and take steps to deter bias-motivated violence and address the harms caused by bigotry and discrimination.
  • Eliminate the reliance on criminalization and incarceration as a public safety and immigration solution.
  • Ensure people living in poverty are not exploited and receive access to life saving resources.
  • Comply with international human rights obligations.

“Our policy guide reflects the issues that matter most to voters in the Deep South, especially Black and Latinx voters, who are eager for policies that empower them, and urges lawmakers to confront the deeply rooted racial, economic and gender disparities that hinder our nation from becoming an equitable and inclusive democracy. The time is now for change – and the South is poised to lead us there,” concluded Warren.
